Soumitra Chatterjee : A Film- Maker Remembers by Suman Ghosh - Om BooksAbout the Book :Despite performances that mesmerized the world for close to fifty years, Soumitra Chatterjee won his first National Award for Best Actor only in 2006. The film: Podokkhep. The director: Suman Ghosh. It marked the beginning of a professional relationship that resulted in some of the best films of the legendary actor’s final phase. And a personal bonding whereby the veteran thespian went on to become a friend, philosopher and guide to the young film-maker. In Soumitra Chatterjee: A Film-maker Remembers, Suman Ghosh goes down memory lane to provide a fascinating insight into his interactions with the actor. From the time he first met Soumitra Chatterjee on the sets of Goutam Ghose’s Dekha, where Suman was an observer, to creating remarkable cinematic moments in their five films together, to engaging with the actor on numerous addas on myriad subjects, the author paints a remarkable portrait of a relationship. How did Soumitra Chatterjee prepare for his role of an old man who becomes childlike in Podokkhep? What were his inputs that elevated the climaxes of Peace Haven and Basu Poribar? How did Soumitra Chatterjee and Mithun Chakraborty collaborate in Nobel Chor to overcome the problem the director faced with impending rain threatening to upset the day’s schedule? What was a typical adda session with the legend like? What triggered the bizarre idea around a film on death that both wanted to work on but which never materialized? As much a perceptive account of the dynamics of an actor-director association as a story of the friendship between two creative individuals, this is a heart-warming tribute to a legend of Indian cinema.About the Author : Binding : Paperback Pages : 176 Genre/Categories : Non-Fiction Memoir Size(W x H) MM : 185 x 180 mm Author : Suman Ghosh Language : English Publish Date : 7Jan2022 Legal Disclaimer: Product images are for illustrative purposes only. Nothing can break the bond between two souls who are connected to each other. No matter how long they are apart, no matter what happens, they are always connected.” Urmila Set against the backdrop of the Ramayana, Lakshmila narrates the story of the selfless love between Lakshman and Urmila without whom the Ramayana would have been incomplete. It lingers on the significant pauses in their relationship, unknown to the world, and gently drives home the unsung truth that the love between Lakshman and Urmila was unusual, divine, subtle and yet potent, carrying across lifetimes. Their love was a silent and selfless commitment, more of a spiritual connection. The Counterfeiter : Abdul Karim Telgi and the Stamp Scam by Bhaswar Mukherjee - Om BooksAbout the Book :Telgi and the stamp scam? Didn’t that happen a quarter of a century ago? Why now? Because the complete story of the counterfeiter and scamster has never been told before. Because the story of the sheer innovation and audacity of an underdog needs to be told. Schooled by tradition, internalized conditioning and familial expectation, she hardly departs from this expected response. What does this word mean to people who have gone through the experience? Is motherhood really the gold standard for women it is assumed to be? Apart from being the most glorified and celebrated word in our cultural history, is mother also the most abused? The Oldest Love Story, a collection of essays, addresses motherhood through the prism of personal experiences. Some of India’s celebrated writers – Kamala Das, Shashi Deshpande, Nabaneeta Dev Sen, C.S. Lakshmi, Vaidehi and a rare gem by Mannu Bhandari – star in this extraordinary collage. The Originals Othello by William Shakespeare - Om BooksAbout the Book :“Look to her, Moor, if thou hast eyes to see: She has deceived her father, and may thee.” Othello (The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice) by English dramatist and national poet, William Shakespeare, was written in 1603–1604 and published in the First Folio of 1623. This five-act tragedy begins when the celebrated black general of Venice, Othello, appoints Cassio as his chief lieutenant instead of the soldier, Iago. Blinded by jealousy and resentment, Iago plots Othello’s downfall. He falsely accuses Othello’s wife Desdemona and Cassio of having a love affair. Iago gets ample help from Roderigo, who resents Othello’s fame as much as Iago, to carry out his evil plan. The villainous Iago manipulates everyone around him and exploits Othello’s sexual jealousy for his own gains. The Originals The Devils by Fyodor Dostoevsky - Om BooksAbout the Book :I think the devil doesn’t exist, but man has created him, he has created him in his own image and likeness. The Devils, a novel by renowned Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky, was first published in the journal The Russian Messenger in 1871–72. This classic was written after Dostoevsky returned from Siberian exile. Dark and violent, this political satire shines the light on the nihilism rampant in Russia in the 1860s. The drama begins when a fictional town becomes the site of a botched revolution set off by master conspirator Pyotr Verkhovensky. A mysterious aristocratic figure called Nikolai Stavrogin plays a major role in the plot, exercising a great deal of influence over the thoughts and actions of all the characters. The idealistic generation of the 1840s, influenced by Western thought is represented by a character called Stephan Verkhovensky (Verkhovensky’s father and Nikolai Stavrogin’s childhood teacher). Hop, Skip and Jump: Peregrinations of a Diplomat's Wife by Reba Som - Om BooksAbout the Book :Reba Som has been an acclaimed author, academic, historian, singer, and a cultural ambassador. In Hop, Skip and Jump, she harnesses her multidisciplinary skills to narrate the many-layered story of her experiences as the wife of an IFS officer.Travelling abroad for the first time with her career diplomat husband, Himachal Som, as a twenty-two-year-old bride fresh out of college, Reba Som was thrust headlong into an alien universe. Over the next forty years she travelled all over the world with Himachal, negotiating the perks of diplomatic life along with its confounding challenges. Multiple postings, bringing up children, housekeeping, paltry allowances, being part of an incipient rebelliousness that brewed among spouses against the blanket ban imposed by the Ministry of External Affairs on their working abroad, anecdotes and trivia from travel in many countries, observations about multiple societies and cultures – there is little that escapes Reba Som’s keen eye and keener imagination. At the same time this is also an ardent ‘feminist’ enterprise. She narrates with admirable candour her striving for self-actualization in the shadow of her husband’s career, the tensions within a marriage when partners evolve with their separate identities and interests, and how her academic interests, writing and singing, helped create a discrete space of her own.A memoir, a travelogue and a potted sociocultural history of an India finding its place in the world all rolled into one, this is an unforgettable chronicle of a remarkable life.About the Author : Binding : Paperback Pages : 240 Genre/Categories : Memoir Size(W x H) MM : 129 x 198 Author : Reba Som Language : English Publish Date : 25Jul2023 Legal Disclaimer: Product images are for illustrative purposes only. Monalisa No Longer Smiles : An Anthology of Writings from across the World by Mitali Chakravarty - Om BooksAbout the Book :In quest of a world without borders As nations redraw borders to undo imagined past wrongs or reclaim past glory, the world remains a silent witness to conflicts that are as old as history—the struggle between the weak and the powerful; the oppressed and the oppressor; the right and the wrong. While politics often invents a vocabulary that insists on differences, the arts expand the borders of our minds. Ideas and imagination, like stories, are borderless. Over the past few years, the Borderless Journal has been bringing together distinct voices from different social and cultural milieus. This anthology showcases a few of them. The stories, poems, essays lay bare the conflicts between religions, classes, genders, ideologies, the old and the new, and also the conflicts within us. These narratives by literary stalwarts like Rabindranath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam and Louis Couperus, and several emerging voices, including Aditya Shankar and Bibek Adhikari, offer an insight into human conditions. It is important to read and share them. At the heart of this collection are conversations with writers, poets, thinkers, like Aruna Chakravarti, Arundhathi Subramaniam, Devaki Jain, Goutam Ghose, who not only share their personal journey in writing, but also reflect on the role of translations in building bridges between people and cultures. These conversations entertain us, nourish us, stir us, unsettle us and centre on values that Borderless Journal hopes to nurture—syncretism, truth, courage, love, forgiveness and kindness. Monalisa No Longer Smiles will definitely bring a smile to your face because it is a celebration of the human spirit.About the Author : Binding : Paperback Pages : 360 Genre/Categories : Anthology Size(W x H) MM : 129 x 198 Author : Mitali Chakravarty Language : English Publish Date : 21Nov 2022 Legal Disclaimer: Product images are for illustrative purposes only. This collection features some of the master’s finest short stories in translation. The Death of Ivan Ilyich is a long, lyrical, and poignant exploration of a man’s arduous journey towards the acceptance of his own mortality. It is also an incisive comment on the hypocritical modern middle-class lifestyle and its limitations. By confronting death, the hero of the story contemplates the meaning of life and man’s place in the world. The Death of Ivan Ilyich is considered one of the masterpieces of Tolstoy’s later fiction and it was written soon after his religious conversion in the 1870s. The Kreutzer Sonata is an unflinching portrayal of marital discord and breakdown and The Devil traces the complex trajectory of sexual temptation and desire.Tolstoy’s short stories dissect familial bonds, romantic love, the irrationality of human impulses as well as significant social and political churnings in 19th- century Russia."About the Author : Binding : Paperback Pages : 264 Genre/Categories : Classic Fiction Size(W x H) MM : 198 x 129 mm Author : Leo Tolstoy Language : English Publish Date : 22Aug2022 Legal Disclaimer: Product images are for illustrative purposes only. The Originals A Room of One's Own - Unabridged Classics by Virginia Woolf - Om BooksAbout the Book :A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction. A Room of One’s Own, among Virginia Woolf’s best- known works, is an extended essay, based on two lectures that she delivered in October 1928 at Newnham College and Girton College, women’s constituent colleges at the University of Cambridge. First published in September 1929 as a book, this seminal feminist text makes a case for a literal and figurative space for women writers within a literary tradition dominated by men. Woolf feels strongly that the argument that women produce inferior works of literature must be analysed against the backdrop of their existence and circumstances—unlike men, historically and socially, women are denied the time, space and economic independence to produce artistic and creative works. Nearly a century after the publication of A Room of One’s Own, Virginia Woolf’s observation still seems to ring true.About the Author : Binding : Paperback Pages : 96 Genre/Categories : Classic Fiction Size(W x H) MM : 198 x 129 mm Author : Virginia Woolf Language : English Publish Date : 20Sep2023 Legal Disclaimer: Product images are for illustrative purposes only. On the Trail of Thugs and Thieves: True Accounts of Crime from the Hindi Heartland by Aloke Lal and Manas Lal - Om BooksAbout the Book :• A train wreck becomes an opportunity for thievery.• A young woman thwarts a burglary attempt but is robbed of the dignity to exercise her choice because of her impoverished background.• An indigent village is looted to feed the nexus between the authorities and the criminals.Crimes against humanity hold a universal truth: poverty is the worst form of violence. Its wounds run deep as they violate basic human rights and dignity. On the Trail of Thugs and Thieves firmly belongs to the genre of truth being stranger than fiction as it traces the footsteps of former Director-General of Police Aloke Lal through thirty-seven years of adorning the khaki. The gripping accounts of sensational larcenies from the yellowing pages of police records reveal that while it is easy for the police to deal with crimes as per the law, it is onerous to heal the social malaise that causes them. Though the larger implications of solving these crimes are priceless because lives are saved, reformed and dignified. The human narratives recounted with wit, humour and a great deal of sensitivity by the decorated IPS officer not only expose inhumanity of the gross kind, but also evoke moral outrage and shake our collective conscience.‘Set in the Hindi heartland, these intricate investigations into different types of crime make for a riveting read...The Lals are truly gifted storytellers.’- K. Celebrated German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche’s The Birth ofTragedy from the Spirit of Music was first published in 1872.The book was reissued in 1886 as The Birth of Tragedy, Or: Hellenism and Pessimism, prefaced by an essay titled An Attempt at Self-Criticism. In this seminal work of dramatic theory, which is divided into 25 chapters, Nietzsche explores the history of the tragic form as well as the nature of Greek tragedy and its development. He holds up Athenian tragedy as an art form that transcends the meaninglessness, nihilism, and disorder of the chaotic world. By watching tragedies and celebrating them, Greek audiences experienced fear and suffering and confronted life head-on.Tragedies helped them to find the deeper meaning of human existence. Nietzsche also shines a light on the differences between the Dionysian and the Apollonian in The Birth of Tragedy, emphasising that these two elements are constantly at war for control of human lives.About the Author : Binding : Paperback Pages : 158 Genre/Categories : Classic Fiction Size(W x H) MM : 129 x 198 Author : Friedrich Nietzsche Language : English Publish Date : 2Jan2022 Legal Disclaimer: Product images are for illustrative purposes only. The text, commissioned by the Communist League in London, was originally published in German and later translated into English. An incisive critique of capitalism and its social and cultural ramifications, The Manifesto has garnered a wide readership across the globe since the 1870s. It continues to serve as a seminal text calling for social, economic, and political systems based on fairness and democracy, rather than the ruthless exploitation of the working class by the bourgeoisie. The Original The Lost Jewels and other stories by Rabindranath Tagore - Om BooksAbout the Book :Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941) was a prolific writer during the colonial period and is acclaimed for his lyricism, colloquialism and naturalism. His stories explored socio-political hypocrisies, ethnical prejudices, class-based discrimination, stereotypical characters in a domestic set-up, and more in a largely conventional society. Through his work, he resisted the rigid linguistic moulds and modernised Bengali art. Be it the yearning to belong in ‘Kabuliwala,’ the supernatural mystery in ‘The Living and the Dead,’ the ways in which class affects humanity in‘The Postmaster’ or the impact of materialism in ‘The Lost Jewels’ — Tagore’s stories reflect a kaleidoscope of human emotions, firmly etched on a sensitive landscape. Withstanding societal evolution, his stories created a profound association between his characters and the readers. While almost eighty years have passed since his last contribution to literature, few names manage to evoke emotions as acute as Tagore’s. The Lost Jewels and Other Stories is a celebration of one of India’s greatest writers, with some of his most emblematic stories, in his inimitable style, language and humour including ‘The Home-Coming,’ ‘The Skeleton,’ ‘Giribala,’ and ‘The River Stairs.’About the Author : Binding : Paperback Pages : 487 Genre/Categories : Classic Fiction Size(W x H) MM : 129 x 198 Author : Rabindranath Tagore Language : English Publish Date : 16Jul2023 Legal Disclaimer: Product images are for illustrative purposes only. The Originals The Collected Poems of John Keats by John Keats - Om BooksAbout the Book :“You are a good young man,” she said. “But I do not like husbands. I will never have another.” British novelist George Eliot (pseudonym of Mary Ann Evans) painted a rich and vivid portrait of a small 19th-century town in her acclaimed novel, Middlemarch. Published in eight parts in 1871–72 and also published in four volumes in 1872, Eliot’s magnum opus delves into the lives of people belonging to various classes in Middlemarch—the landed gentry, clergy, farmers, labourers, and professionals. The narrative revolves around two central characters—Dorothea Brooke, an intelligent woman who marries the wrong man, and Tertius Lydgate, an ambitious, progressive doctor who also makes a costly mistake when choosing a mate. Eliot refused to bow to the dictates of tradition and ended her novel on a happy note as women writers of the time were expected to do. Rich in insight and layered with moral ambiguity, Middlemarch boldly lays bare the reality of matrimony. This quintessentially modern novel was hailed by pioneering modernist author Virginia Woolf as “one of the few English novels written for grown-up people.”About the Author : Binding : Paperback Pages : 804 Genre/Categories : Classic Fiction Size(W x H) MM : 198 x 129 mm Author : John Keats Language : English Publish Date : 15May2023 Legal Disclaimer: Product images are for illustrative purposes only. His relationship with his mother towers over his romances with Miriam Leivers, his repressed, religious girlfriend, and Clara Dawes, a mature and free-spirited woman. The characters of the alcoholic miner father, and the mother, who resists him in the novel, are said to be modelled on Lawrence’s parents. The older brother,William, who dies young in the novel mirrors Lawrence’s brother Ernest, who passed away. The Originals The Pickwick Papers - Unabridged English Classics by Charles Dickens - Om BooksAbout the Book :“There are very few moments in a man’s existence when he experiences so much ludicrous distress, or meets with so little charitable commiseration, as when he is in pursuit of his own hat.” Acclaimed British writer Charles Dickens was commissioned to write the accompanying text for a series of comic engravings by Robert Seymour in February 1836. Dickens’s witty accounts of Samuel Pickwick and his friends in the London-based Pickwick Club became an instant success and he gained an immense fan following. The Pickwick Papers (1836–37), Dickens’s first and arguably funniest novel, was published in monthly instalments by Chapman & Hall. The eccentric cast of characters in The Pickwick Papers are typical Dickensian creations, caricatured in speech, body language, and temperament. Mr. Pickwick, the central character, remains a perennial favourite of readers across the globe. Painting a vivid account of Mr. Pickwick and his fellow club members (Nathaniel Winkle, Augustus Snodgrass, and Tracy Tupman), as they set out on their mission to observe some specimens of the human race at close quarters, the novel grapples with the themes of class, money, social inequality, incarceration, and parenting.About the Author : Binding : Paperback Pages : 864 Genre/Categories : Classic Fiction Size(W x H) MM : 198 x 129 mm Author : Charles Dickens Language : English Publish Date : 10May2023 Legal Disclaimer: Product images are for illustrative purposes only. The Originals Middlemarch: A Study of Provincial Life - Unabridged Classics by George Eliot - Om BooksAbout the Book :“You are a good young man,” she said. This quintessentially modern novel was hailed by pioneering modernist author Virginia Woolf as “one of the few English novels written for grown-up people.”About the Author : Binding : Paperback Pages : 804 Genre/Categories : Classic Fiction Size(W x H) MM : 198 x 129 mm Author : George Eliot Language : English Publish Date : 30Jan2023 Legal Disclaimer: Product images are for illustrative purposes only. The Originals Far from the Madding Crowd - Unabridged Classics by Thomas Hardy - Om BooksAbout the Book :“Love is a possible strength in an actual weakness.” British novelist Thomas Hardy’s popular novel, Far From the Madding Crowd was published anonymously in serialized form in The Cornhill Magazine in 1874 and in book form under Hardy’s name the same year. Set in Wessex, the story revolves around Bathsheba Everdene, the owner of a small farm, and her relationships with three suitors–the handsome and flighty soldier, Sergeant Troy whom Everdene marries; the obsessive farmer, William Boldwood; and the steadfast and loving shepherd, Gabriel Oak who eventually becomes Everdene’s second husband. Imbued with an authentic sense of place, the novel brings the pastoral setting of Wessex alive. Hardy manages to weave together strands of comedy, melodrama, and tragedy with consummate skill while tracing the trajectory of Everdene’s tempestuous life and loves.
