Fortunately there is Kenneth Lowther, Thomas's friendand athesit philospher, who tries to explain to Amelia, the disconcerting India, its religion, coustumes and the magnifiecience of it maharaja's. The young lady finds it difficult to find her bearings in the new set-up.
