About The Product:
Popularly known as “Shayar-e-Inquilab” or poet of revolution, Josh Malihabadi was an Urdu poet known for his liberal values and questioning the establishment. He was a prolific writer and his poetry has been published in nineteen anthologies. He also penned his autobiography, "Yaadon Ki Baraat " , which is acclaimed for its frankness and honesty.
Josh Malihabadi was born on 5 December 1898 as Shabbir Hasan Khan into a Muslim family with a rich poetic legacy. In 1925, Josh started his career as a translator at Osmania University Hyderabad, but had to leave when he was expelled for writing a nazm against the ruling Nizam. He then founded a literary magazine," Kaleem" , in which he wrote articles for ending the British rule in India. At this time he became actively involved in the country’s freedom struggle. In 1954 Josh was bestowed the Padma Bhushan, the country’s third highest civilian award. But In 1956 he migrated to Pakistan as he thought that there would not be much scope for Urdu language in independent India. In Pakistan he worked for Anjuman-i-Taraqqi and continued to live there until his death in 1982 in Islamabad. Josh was posthumously awarded the Hilal-e-Imtiaz (Crescent of Excellence) the second highest civilian award of Pakistan in 2013.
This book presents a selection nazms, ghazals and rubaiyas of Josh, along with their English translation as well as transliterations in both Hindi and English so that the readers can enjoy the original beauty of Urdu poetry.
