Shakeel Jamali’s ghazals carry a unique freshness. His way of composing couplets is distinctively his own, and so is his language, which is often close to everyday conversation. His creative brilliance particularly shines through in shorter metres. Shakeel Jamali weaves verses out of the small joys and sorrows of ordinary life and the minor and major flaws of his society. He does so in such a simple and innocent manner that his poetry acquires a touch of poignancy, charm, and delight. Through his poetry, he has carved out a unique place for himself. He writes in a very plain, fluent, and lively style. Smoothness and flow are the hallmarks of his verse. With sheer innocence, he composes couplets so effortlessly that both listeners and readers are left spellbound. Shakeel Jamali was born on 1 August 1958 in Chandpur, Bijnor (U.P.), his ancestral hometown. From his early days, he actively participated in writing, debates, and cultural programs at school and college. Several reputed journals have published special features on his literary journey. He has also worked in journalism, contributing to Nai Duniya (Urdu weekly) and Harf-e-Aakhir. For television, he prepared nearly 70 documentary episodes on the lives and works of poets and writers. In recognition of his poetic contributions, the Delhi Urdu Academy honored him with the Poetry Award (2019–2020). He has published four poetry collections: Dhoop Tez Hai (1999), Katore Mein Chand (2016, NCPUL), Kagaz Par Aasman (2017), and Mauj Mein Hai Banjara (2023, based on nazms). He has been residing in Delhi for the past two decades.
